Final surfaces - protective coatings

After the etching process, the exposed copper on the circuit board would oxidise and impair the solderability of the components. For this reason, the exposed copper surfaces are coated with a final surface in one of the last production steps.
This protects the copper underneath from oxidation and thus improves the shelf life of the PCB. In addition, the final surface increases the wetability of the connection surfaces during soldering.

The available final surfaces differ in terms of their shelf life, typical areas of application and costs. However, the final surface is usually determined

by subsequent processing steps, the end product or the planned location of the end product.

OSP - Organic preservative for solderability - Organic protective layer

Organic solderability preservative (OSP) is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly coating for copper.

OSP is a surface treatment for PCBs that is also known as an anti-tarnish agent.

In the OSP PCB process, an organic lacquer coating is applied to a clean copper surface using an adsorption process. The durability is approximately 6 months.

    PROPERTIES

    PROTEC Sn

    As a thin metal surface, immersion tin is ideal for processing modern surface-mounted components.

    The planarity of the PCB surface is not affected by the thin end surface, the thermal load on the PCB

    is very low compared to hot tinning. The copper surface is coated with a protective metallic tin layer.

    PROTEC NI/AU

    Chemical gold is also known as ENIG (electroless nickel immersion gold). Like immersion tin and immersion silver, electroless gold is a very planar

    PCB surface with very good oxidation properties. It is ideal for fine-pitch and bonding applications. Shelf life approx. 12 months.

    PROTEC Ag

    Chemical silver is a printed circuit board surface that is chemically very similar to tin, but has better properties in oxidation and contact applications.

    However, electroless silver is also a sensitive surface and therefore has a low market share. Chemical silver is very suitable for high-frequency applications.

    Shelf life approx. 6 months.
